In a new interview with Total Film magazine (via News.com.au), Salma Hayek recounted directors instructing her to “sound dumber and speak faster.”

The 53-year-old actress revealed that her early background as a trained actor was often dismissed by directors in Hollywood.

“Unfortunately, I never had a lot of chances to do parts where I could use a lot of the things I learned,” Hayek noted. “I’ve had directors say to me, ‘Dumber and faster. Sound dumber and speak faster!’”

The “Like a Boss” star first made it big in her native Mexico where she played the title role in the wildly popular telenovela, “Teresa.” In 1991, Hayek moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting. Hayek’s lack of English — combined with her dyslexia — made finding roles a challenge.

Hayek’s Hollywood moment would come in 1995 when director Robert Rodriguez and his producer and then-wife Elizabeth Avellan, cast the actress alongside Antonio Banderas in “Desperado.”

Since then, Hayek has gone on to star in numerous blockbusters, notably “Frida,” for which she received an Academy Award nomination in 2002. She just completed filming the eagerly awaited Marvel film “The Eternals” opposite Angelina Jolie and Kit Harington.

Hayek is married to French billionaire François-Henri Pinault with whom she shares 12-year-old daughter, Valentina.
