Patton Oswalt mocked Americans protesting coronavirus lockdowns nationwide in a tweet that went viral Saturday.
“Anne Frank spent 2 years hiding in an attic and we’ve been home for just over a month with Netflix, food delivery & video games and there are people risking viral death by storming state capital buildings & screaming, ‘Open Fuddruckers!’” wrote Oswalt, 51.
The comedian, known for his role in “The King of Queens,” had racked up more than 39,000 retweets in just a few hours.
Oswalt’s tweet comes after President Trump called for a number of states under extended lockdown to be “liberated” Friday. Large organized protests were seen Saturday in states hard-hit from COVID-19, including Michigan and Texas.
Fans were quick to respond.
“The same people who were like ‘I’ll be a warlord in the apocalypse’ can’t even deal with being by themselves for a month,” @wandrin_ghost wrote.
Some commenters, however, defended the burger chain.
“To be fair, Fuddruckers burgers are amazing,” @MatthewZelman tweeted.
Other fans called Oswalt out for being “elitist.”
“This is extremely elitist, many of these people are out of work and on their last leg. Yes, if you are part of the lucky few who are able to work from home or have jobs that are essential it seems this easy. Millions of Americans are struggling right now… come on Patton!” said @andrew_burns94, who assured readers he is “in no way a Trump supporter.”
