Shakespeare in the Park is the latest major New York event to fall due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The annual summertime festival, typically running May to August, was canceled Friday by its operator, the Public Theater. This marks the first time the popular free event won’t be held at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park in its 58-year history.

“Every summer for the last 58 years we have reveled in gathering under the stars at the magical Delacorte Theater for Free Shakespeare in the Park,” the Public said on Twitter. “But this year is different. This year, we must stand together in keeping our city and each other safe. This means our summer season of Free Shakespeare in the Park will not be possible and we must cancel our planned productions.”

Those shows were to include “Richard II” and a musical version of “As You Like It.”

Even more than with most theaters, social distancing would be an issue for Shakespeare in the Park. In addition to the Delacorte being a large venue with 1,800 seats, patrons typically wait all day in a large, packed line for the chance to snag free tickets to a show.

The summer series has featured such stars as Meryl Streep, Al Pacino and Denzel Washington.
