Rihanna is teaming up with Twitter boss Jack Dorsey to help a vulnerable segment of the population — domestic abuse survivors.
On Thursday, the 32-year-old Grammy Award-winning artist announced a joint funding effort between the Clara Lionel Foundation — founded by Rihanna in 2012 — and Dorsey, 43, to address the huge surge in domestic violence cases that have taken place in Los Angeles since the coronavirus lockdown took effect.
According to the Los Angeles Housing Authority, approximately 90 people a week have been turned away from domestic violence shelters since the “Safer at Home” order took effect in late March.
The combined $4.2 million in funds will “provide 10 weeks of support including shelter, meals, and counseling for individuals and their children suffering from domestic violence at a time when shelters are full and incidents are on the rise,” per a press release.
“Victims of domestic violence exist all over the world, so this is just the beginning,” the statement also read.
Rihanna has already donated $5 million to help combat the pandemic and Dorsey announced that he will be donating $1 billion of his equity, almost a third of his net worth towards fighting coronavirus, in addition to other issues.
