Leave it to Drake to make up a dance out of the coronavirus crisis in the video for his new single, “Toosie Slide.”
Yes, pretty much all this weekend — when you have nothing better to do than dance in the privacy of your home — you’ll be going “Right foot, up / Left foot, slide / Left foot, up / Right foot, slide,” as the lyrics say.
It’s the first stepping jam for the stay-at-home era. And it’s kinda brilliant.
Rocking a quarantine-chic black face mask, black gloves and a camouflage flight jacket — you can barely recognize him, except for his borderline corny dance moves — Drizzy is representing for the isolation that we’re all feeling right now.
But he’s still keeping it sexy, swag in full effect.
The “Toosie Slide” single and video — which were both dropped as a surprise weekend jam early Friday — are a clear sign of the times.
The breezy beat is clearly meant to be a welcome escape from the heaviness of the times, but after all the talk about sliding to the groove, Drake acknowledges that we “can’t let this one slide” as in, stay at home. And when you must go out, mask- and glove-up, folks.
It’s already become the latest TikTok challenge entertaining teens bored in their houses.
The video, which appears to be shot in Drake’s house in Toronto, opens with shots of desolate streets at 10:20 p.m. Then we see the “In My Feelings” rapper bopping around his house — trophy room and all — as he does the right thing by staying at home.
If only we all had encased Grammys to bop around as well.
But it’s uplifting to hear and see Drake doing what Drake does: keeping it ever so chill and cool amidst all this chaos.
