When Bindi Irwin married Chandler Powell in an intimate family ceremony on March 25, she did so wearing a wedding dress that paid special tribute to her parents.

The 21-year-old Animal Planet star chose a long-sleeved sunflower lace gown directly inspired by the one her mother Terri wore when she tied the knot with late “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin in 1992.

“I wanted something very similar because I’ve admired [my mom’s] dress since I was tiny,” Bindi told People. “When I was about 12 years old, I put on mum’s wedding dress and it was a really, really special … it’s over 50 years old because it’s been in the family for that long.”

Unfortunately, Terri’s exact gown didn’t fit her daughter and was too old and delicate to be altered, but Bindi found a similar style at Brisbane bridal boutique Paddington Weddings, complete with floral lace that Bindi said “reminded me of my family and my dad.”

“When we would go on projects and drives together, we’d often drive through these huge sunflower fields in the middle of nowhere and we always stopped to take them in,” she explained. “[The dress] was really special and beautiful.”

In other words, it was love at first sight. “It was just perfect, I said, ‘Oh my goodness, that’s the dress,’ and we all started crying again,” Bindi recalled.

The “Crikey! It’s the Irwins” star, who styled her gown with a matching white lace headband, married 22-year-old Powell at Australia Zoo, where the couple first met in 2013. Although they’d been planning their nuptials for nearly a year, the COVID-19 pandemic caused them to change course, and they wound up marrying with only immediate family members present.

“This was a very difficult decision but important to keep everyone safe,” Bindi shared on Instagram. “Right now we’re encouraging the world to hold onto hope and love, which will carry us forward during this profound time in history.”
