Michael Rapaport will F-bomb you into social distancing

Michael Rapaport wants you to stay home. To be more accurate, he wants you to STAY THE F HOME. Michael Rapaport wants you to stay home. To be more accurate, he wants you to STAY THE F HOME. The comic actor and director (“Atypical,” “The War at Home”), who’s hosted a podcast called “I Am Rapaport” since 2015, blew up YouTube and Instagram recently with a series of hilariously profane quasi-public service announcements about COVID-19 safety. The Post caught up with him — at home, of course.

How did your coronavirus rants get started?

I got asked to do a public-service announcement by a very prominent person who’s done a series of PSAs, and it was a very generic script. I didn’t do it. If I was gonna do a PSA, it wouldn’t just be, “Hey, guys, we need you to do this … “This is beyond that, whether we want to accept it or not. This is where we’re at. Hopefully I can make people laugh, even with serious things.

Why do you think people continue to go out?

I don’t f - - king know. Especially in New York City. I saw footage of people taking pictures of that [hospital] ship. You’d be lucky not to end up on that f - -kin’ ship! Get in the f - - kin’ house! Leave the f - - kin’ ship alone! You can watch TV, and you’ll see plenty about the ship. I don’t understand it. You need a picture? You’re not f - - kin’ Annie Leibovitz. Go home.

Are you still in New York?

My family and I are in LA. I’m glad I left, but I’m concerned about my friends and family. My dad’s 86, and lives right in the middle of Manhattan, by himself. He’s about as New York as it gets. The idea of something happening to him — it’s scary. It’s scary for the people who work in the shops, the policemen, the firemen, everyone else, top to bottom. It’s a crazy f - - kin’ time.

Are there New York public spaces you miss particularly?

For me, it would be riding on the train and being in the crowded streets. Being in my favorite coffee place. Being able to, you know, not be afraid to ride a f - - king bus. That would be nice. I’ve been thinking about the really simple things. I was looking at these photographs from the 1980s, with people on the train — it looks miserable, but I would love to be on a crowded train.

What are you binge-watching?

Like everybody, I watched “Tiger King.” I re-watched “The Shining,” which is a very good isolation film. And old Knicks games on NBA TV. They still bring back the same feelings, at the end, as if you’re expecting a different ending. Some of those games can get you out of your head a little bit.
