Marriott is probing its second major data breach in just over a year — one that may have exposed personal information for millions of hotel guests, the company said.

The breach — the third Marriott has reported in less than two years — potentially exposed the names, addresses, birth dates, loyalty account details and other information for as many as 5.2 million guests, the Maryland-based conglomerate said Tuesday.

The company is still investigating the incident, but said it does not believe any payment card information, driver’s license numbers or Marriott Bonvoy benefit account passwords were exposed.

Marriott said it discovered in late February that an “unexpected amount” of guest information was accessed on a company system using the login credentials of two employees at a franchise hotel. The breach likely started in mid-January, the company said.

Marriott disabled the problematic login credentials upon learning of the breach and has notified the relevant authorities, according to a news release.

“The company does not currently believe that its total costs related to this incident will be significant,” Marriott said.

The breach came a little more than a year after Marriott revealed that hackers had stolen the personal information of up to 500 million Starwood Hotels guests. The company discovered that breach affecting brands including St. Regis and W Hotels in September 2018 and subsequently learned that the Starwood systems had been hacked since 2014.

Marriott also revealed in October 2019 that a hacker had accessed information about company staffers, including their names, addresses and Social Security numbers.

Marriott’s stock price was down 5.5 percent at $70.69 as of 11:47 a.m. Wednesday.
