Monty Python legend John Cleese has been fish-slapped on Twitter after poking fun at panicking Americans amid the coronavirus pandemic.
British comic Cleese tweeted, “It strikes me that it’s terribly funny that the response of some Americans to a virus is to buy guns.” Tennis legend Martina Navratilova responded, “Yeah, I’m not laughing though.”
Others defended the right to bear arms: “It strikes me as sad that the British response to exercising an enumerated right is to be quite the condescending wanker,” one user responded. Many agreed with Cleese, prompting such quips as “Praying the virus away didn’t work, so it’s time to try shooting it.”
The massive response on social media has prompted Cleese to repeatedly tweet about Americans buying guns. After one person responded, “The poor British, unmanned, disarmed and proud of it. Yikes,” Cleese replied, “I think the British are proud that they DON’T need a gun to make themselves feel manly … So … keep your pecker up, Brad. Remember, assault weapons keep ED [erectile dysfunction] away.”
