As the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread across the world, Hollywood has become one of its biggest financial victims.
Warner Brothers studio announced Tuesday that it is pushing the release of “Wonder Woman 1984,” which was supposed to hit theaters June 5, back one month amid growing concerns over theater closures.
“When we greenlit ‘Wonder Woman 1984,’ it was with every intention to be viewed on the big screen and are excited to announce that Warner Bros. Pictures will be bringing the film to theatres on Aug. 14,” the chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, Toby Emmerich, said in a statement.
Gal Gadot, the star of the “Wonder Woman” sequel, tweeted about the change of plans along with a new poster for the film.
“In these dark and scary times, I am looking forward to a brighter future ahead. Where we can share the power of cinema together again,” Gadot wrote. “Excited to redate our WW84 film to August 14, 2020. I hope everyone is safe. Sending my love to you all.”
While “Wonder Woman 1984” has a firm release date, the same cannot be said for the screenplay adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights.”
The adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical was originally scheduled to dance its way into theaters on June 26. However, a new release date has not been set. There has been no reason given for the lack of a new release date.
Miranda, who wrote the show’s music and lyrics, also took to Twitter to tell fans the sad news.
The postponement of these films and others was seemingly inevitable as theaters across the country have shut down to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
