“Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon is launching the “Cowbell Challenge” amid the Chinese virus pandemic, calling on Americans to unite at an agreed time on Friday, open their windows and make noise to support first responders and each other.
The star is currently hosting “The Tonight Show: At Home Edition” from his log cabin-style home with his two young daughters clambering all over him, his labrador Gary running around — and his wife Nancy Juvonen behind the camera.
Speaking on the “Today” show on Thursday, he said was inspired by the Italians, who despite being on lockdown, have been singing from their balconies, resulting in a host of viral videos that have gone worldwide as a testament to the enduring human spirit in a crisis.
Fallon, 45, said he wants everyone to take part on Friday [March 20] at 3 p.m. ET (12 p.m. PT), saying: “I want everyone to get out your cowbell, get out a pot and pan. 3pm – open your window or door – if you have a balcony, good for you!
“Make some noise and tell this virus to get away from us, we don’t want you. Let’s make some noise. Cowbell challenge this Friday 3pm!”
The comic and TV host famously starred in the classic “More Cowbell” sketch while on Saturday Night Live.
The sketch, a spoof of VH1’s documentary series “Behind the Music”, follows the recording of the song “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” by Blue Öyster Cult.
It featured guest host Christopher Walken as music producer “The Bruce Dickinson”, and Will Ferrell as fictional cowbell player Gene Frenkle, whose overzealous playing annoys his bandmates.
Fallon also said during an interview with “Today” host Savannah Guthrie Thursday morning of his live broadcasts from home, “The show must go on…the last time I felt something like this was 9/11 … then I looked towards late night hosts, Jay Leno, Conan, David Letterman, and I was so happy they were there for me.
“Letterman said ‘it’s a time to be courageous’ and he said ‘sometimes pretending to be courageous is just as good’ … We’re all in this together.”
Fallon is trying to raise money for a different charity every night, he raised funds for ‘Broadway Cares’ on Wednesday night.
He’s also had celebrity guests on his remote show including Lin Manuel Miranda via Facetime.
Fallon says Jennifer Garner will appear on Thursday night.
He also joked that despite being cooped up with his wife and kids, he said he and his wife still like each other amid the quarantine — joking “we chose well!”.
