Maggie Griffin, the mother of comedian Kathy Griffin, died Tuesday. She was 99.

Kathy made the announcement on social media Tuesday night.

“My Mom, the one and only, Maggie Griffin, passed away today. I am gutted. My best friend. I’m shaking,” she wrote on Twitter and Instagram about her mother, who was a fan-beloved, wine-swilling presence in the comic’s 2005-2010 reality show, “Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List.” In her posts, Kathy included a photo with her mom, who is seen hoisting a wine glass poolside at their LA home.

Kathy, 59, sent a shout-out to fans who appreciated Maggie, who was often fodder for the comic’s standup routines. “I’m so grateful you got to be part of her life. You loved her. I know it. She knew it,” she wrote. “She’s irreplaceable.”

My Mom, the one and only, Maggie Griffin, passed away today. Hours ago. I am gutted. She was my best friend. She was my family. You knew her. She appreciated you guys so much. I’m shaking. I won’t ever be prepared. Her point of view. So unique. We just GOT each other. I’m so grateful you got to be part of her life. You loved her. I know it. She knew it. She’s irreplaceable. I’m telling you right now, I am not doing well with this. I’m rambling now. Sorry. It truly feels like the end of an era. Oh, and OF COURSE she went on St Patrick’s Day. I love you guys. KG

The red-haired Irish comic also couldn’t help but note the timing of her mother’s passing. “Oh, and OF COURSE she went on St Patrick’s Day,” she wrote.

Celebrities rolled out condolence messages, including Chrissy Teigen, Sharon Stone, Aisha Tyler and Kris Jenner, whose daughter and son-in-law, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, were the Griffins’ one-time neighbors.

“God Bless precious Maggie and may she Rest In Peace … love you Kathy,” Jenner commented on Instagram.

“Your Mother was amazing. Hilarious, welcoming, kind. You are your Mothers daughter,” said fellow comic Caroline Rhea. “Although You can’t see her She will be with you in your heart mind and soul forever,” said singer and dancer Charo.

In January 2019, Kathy acknowledged on social media that her mother had “rapidly fallen into the throes of dementia,” adding that she “was so sharp she always kept me on my toes. Her mind was so naturally quick, funny, and smart. No one could get anything past her. Watching that slip away so fast has been devastating.”

Maggie’s husband, John, died in 2007 at age 90.
