Divers look for missing California teen Kiely Rodni and find a body and a car that has been turned over

Divers looking for the missing California teen Kiely Rodni said they found a body and an overturned car in the reservoir near where she was last seen more than two weeks ago.

Out of Prosser Creek Reservoir on Sunday afternoon, a dive team found what they think is Rodni's 2013 Honda CRV, which he drove to a graduation party near the lake.

The diver who saw the car underwater told The Post that the license plate on the car was the same as the one on the Honda Rodni was driving when she went missing.

But the police couldn't figure out right away who the body belonged to. Rodni's family did not know for sure that the body was the teen's, according to a spokeswoman.

The divers looked in almost every body of water near Truckee, California, before looking one last time in the water near where the party was held.

Law enforcement on the ground told the team that the body of water had already been thoroughly searched, but the team decided to check again.

Diver Josh Cantu, 31, said, "Police told us they thoroughly searched this body of water." "They gave us a grid map and told us we didn't have to look here."

Within a few minutes of diving, Nick Rinn, who is 48 years old, found a dead body in a car near the shore.

"I went down and checked it out. "I saw the car on its side, checked the license plate, and made sure there were bodies in the car," Rinn told The Post. "Then I came out, we called the family and the police, and we left it up to them to figure out what to do next."

He said that he used sonar to find the car, which couldn't be seen from the surface. Once he was in the water, he said he could see it about 14 feet down.

Cantu said, "Our sonar showed an object bigger than a rock that shouldn't have been there." He added that large objects can be missed by sonar tech if operators aren't trained well. "One of our divers went underwater and was able to figure out what kind of car it was."

Rinn also said that when police searched the area two weeks ago, the water level in the reservoir was higher.

He said, "Now that the water has gone down, we can see that the car went deeper into the water than maybe the police thought." "When a car goes into the water, it takes a while for the air to escape, so it floats for a while before it fills up with water and sinks."

The car and body were found about 20 to 40 feet from the edge of the water, near where the party was held at Prosser Family Campground. The area is called "The Sanctuary" by the people who live there, and it looks out over the Prosser Creek Reservoir.

Police were not able to immediately identify if it was Rodni's body that the divers found.

A member of the dive team had told The Post earlier in the day that finding a vehicle would make it easier to find Rodni.

Diver Doug Bishop, 39, said, "If there's a car in here, it will be easy to find." "It's one thing to hide a body, but a whole other thing to hide a car."

He said that his team "has already cleaned up everything in Truckee, including all the small ponds, based on confidential information we got about her disappearance on Saturday."

The six divers on the AWP crew first used two inflatable boats with sonar to look at the surface of the reservoir for four hours to get a better idea of what they were up against.

From a hot air balloon, the team also looked at the reservoir.

Rinn said that finally finding the car and body was "obviously a double-edged sword." "It's not something you want to find in this kind of situation, but it's good to have answers for your family and the police."

AWP said that in the last two and a half years, they have solved 23 cold cases and found about 500 vehicles underwater, of which they have recovered 187.

Bishop said, "This is a whole different level of resources that have already been put into the case."

The car and body were found more than two weeks after Rodni was reported missing and after officials said they would stop looking so hard for the teenager.

Around 12:30 a.m., Rodni was last seen at the party with about 100 other people. She had texted her mom that she was going home soon, but she never made it back.

Private investigator Stephen Fischer, who has been looking for the missing teen for free, said that the last time her phone rang was at 12:33 a.m., about 50 feet from where the car and body were found.

Fischer, who is 52 years old, told The Post that he told Rodni's father and grandfather that a car and body had been found.

He choked back tears as he said, "I feel so bad for this family." "They're very sad."

The teen's family asked for privacy and said they would not talk to the media a day earlier.

In a statement about Kiely released on Saturday, his family said, "We know in our hearts that you are out there, and we will find you and bring you home."

Investigators thought Rodni might have been taken, so as part of the missing person case, they did a sweep of registered sex offenders in the Lake Tahoe area.
