A man from Minnesota stabbed a teen to death while they were water tubing. He says it was in self-defense

On Monday, a man from Minnesota was arrested on charges that he killed a teen and hurt four others while river tubing in Wisconsin.

Reports say that Nicolae Miu, who is 52 years old, hit someone in self-defense after he lost his phone in the water at Apple River, a popular place for tubing, on Saturday.

In this photo provided by the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office on Monday, Aug. 1, 2022, Nicolae Miu, is pictured in a booking photo. Isaac Schuman, a 17-year-old honor student, died from the knife he used to attack him.

Miu was charged with one count of murder in the first degree and four counts of trying to kill someone in the first degree.

After he was arrested, Miu told a police officer, "They attacked me, and I was in self-defense mode," according to a criminal complaint cited by MPR News.

MPR News said that Miu was tubing with his wife and others when he ran into other people. He was using a snorkel to look for a lost phone in a watertight container when he met them. KARE 11 reported, based on the complaint, that he was accused of "looking for little girls" and being a "child molester" when people in the group surrounded him after he grabbed the water tubes of children.

The complaint says that a video of the incident shows the group moving toward Miu, who had fallen into the water. According to court documents obtained by KARE 11, the suspect stabbed the tuber before the tuber could push him again. He then attacked other people.

One witness said Miu swam up to the group and looked at them "really weird and sketchily," and at least two people told police that Miu punched a young woman in the face when the argument got physical.

KARE 11 said that the prosecutors think Miu could have left the situation before it got worse.

In addition to saying that he was acting in self-defense, Miu said that the knife used in the attack did not belong to him. He also told the police that his life is now "down the tubes," according to CBS Minnesota.

The local news station also said that his lawyer said that what happened was just a "chance encounter."

The local sheriff's office said Sunday that all of the people who were stabbed and lived were in their early 20s. The suspect was found 90 minutes after the attack happened because witnesses took pictures of him and gave them to the police.

Isaac Schuman was a high school senior who died. His family remembered him as someone who had a "incredibly bright future ahead of him."

In a statement to KARE 11, his family said, "We are all heartbroken and devastated beyond words that his future has been tragically and senselessly cut short."

MPR News said that Miu was held on a $1 million bond after her court appearance on Monday. If she is found guilty of murder, she could spend the rest of her life in prison.
