A left-wing group with ties to billionaire George Soros has won a nearly $172 million federal contract from President Joe Biden's administration to help young border crossers avoid deportation, according to a report this week.
Adam Shaw and Joe Schoffstall of Fox News said on Thursday that the Vera Institute of Justice, which has financial ties to Soros, has won a $171.7 million federal contract to help Unaccompanied Alien Children (UACs) avoid being deported from the United States. The UACs will be able to hire lawyers through this contract.
Fox News said that the federal contract could end up giving the Vera Institute of Justice $1 billion in taxpayer money:
The arrangement lasts until March 2023 but can reach as high as $983 million if renewed until March 2027, the agreement shows. This appears to be the largest federal contract Vera has secured for immigration-related services for any single year dating back to the mid-2000s. [Emphasis added]

The Vera Insitute, meanwhile, is propelled by taxpayer-backed government grants and contracts like the one it secured in March. Between July 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021, $152 million of the group’s $191 million in revenue came from government sources, its most recent financial audit shows. [Emphasis added]
The institute seeks to end “mass incarceration” by cutting down on the number of jails, prisons and detention centers in the United States. The group has also signaled support for defunding police. [Emphasis added]
Fox News Digital found that a left-leaning nonprofit working to end mass incarceration won a government contract worth $171.7 million (paid for by taxpayers) that could go up to $1 billion to help unaccompanied minors avoid being deported.
A federal database shows that the Vera Institute of Justice, a New York-based group that wants to stop funding police and sees immigration enforcement agencies as a "threat" to civil liberties, was given a contract in March to help unaccompanied minors with their legal problems. The contract was paid for by the Health and Human Services Department.
The deal lasts until March 2023, but if it is extended until March 2027, it could be worth as much as $983 million. Since the middle of the 2000s, this seems to be the largest contract Vera has gotten from the federal government for immigration services in a single year.
The high nine-figure contract came at a time when the border crisis was getting worse. In May alone, more than 239,000 migrants were stopped, which was a record number. In May, 14,699 unaccompanied minors were found, which is more than the 12,180 found in April and a little more than the 14,052 found in May 2021.
Fox News found out last month that up to a thousand migrant children could be held at the American Hebrew Academy in Greensboro until they can be placed with family members already living in the U.S. or with other sponsors.
Republicans blame the Biden administration for the huge increase in migration to the southern border. They point to more liberal policies, such as limiting interior enforcement and calling for amnesty for illegal immigrants, as well as the rolling back of policies from the Trump administration, such as the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) and building the border wall.
In Central America, poverty, violence, corruption, and climate change are some of the "root causes" of the crisis that the Biden administration has been focusing on to solve it.
In 2018, Breitbart News said that the Obama administration gave $310 million to the Vera Institute of Justice to help UACs stay in the country and avoid being deported.
The group also gets money from the government through "sanctuary jurisdictions."
In 2019, for example, the Vera Institute of Justice and the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, worked together to create a program to help illegal immigrants avoid being deported by giving them free legal services.
