During the Texas school shooting, an officer from Uvalde checks a phone with a Punisher lock screen
New security footage from the Robb Elementary School shooting shows a Uvalde police officer checking his phone with what looks like a 'Punisher' lock screen. This has brought the officer into question.
The Austin American Statesman released the horrifying video on Tuesday. It shows a police officer in the hallway of the elementary school during a shooting. He pulls out his phone, and the logo of the Marvel anti-hero flashes on the screen.
Matt Karolian tweeted, "The cop at #Uvalde standing back and looking at his phone, which has an American flag punisher background, is the perfect example of how American police work today."
Patton Oswalt, an actor and comedian, also pointed out that it was funny that the cop liked the Marvel character.
Oswalt wrote, "Checking out my cool phone with the Punisher logo (so cool!) while I hide and listen to the kids getting killed."
Police in Uvalde have been criticized for how they handled the shooting. Some of the families of the victims say that the police took too long to confront the shooter, which led to the deaths of several children. In the massacre, 19 kids and 2 teachers were killed.
The Punisher, a vigilante who fights crime on his own and is known for using deadly weapons, made his Marvel debut in 1974.
In recent years, the character’s logo has been co-opted by police officers, military personnel and extremists.
“The idea that police, even unofficially, would take on this character just seemed to me to be not only totally inappropriate but also shocking,” creator Gerry Conway said.
During the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, Conway spoke out against police officers who wore the logo.
