America's avowed impotence in the face of the pandemic

The Trump administration, much criticized for its mismanagement of the Covid-19 pandemic, is trying to explain, through the voice of the White House chief of staff, the reasons which led the country to count more than 225,000 dead to date.

The most senior member of President Trump’s executive office made the statement on CNN’s State of the Union broadcast on October 25. Pressed by host Jake Tapper to explain why the United States would not bring the pandemic under control, Mark Meadows replied:

"Because it's a contagious virus, just like the flu. What we need to do is make sure that we have the appropriate mitigating factors, whether it's therapies, vaccines or treatments, to make sure people don't die. ”

The cable channel added that Mr. Meadows has also refused to disclose the extent of the epidemic affecting those around Vice President Mike Pence.

For Joe Biden's running mate, Kamala Harris, these statements which come as group immunity is being discussed show that the Trump administration is "admitting defeat" with the United States breaking "records for the number of people who contract [disease]".
