Walmart said it is creating one-way aisles at its massive superstores beginning Thursday in a bid to stem the spread of coronavirus.
“One-way aisles are designed to increase social distancing and give customers more space on each aisle,” Walmart explained in a Facebook post this week. “There will be floor decals in place to help indicate the direct traffic flow.”
The green and red decals will tell customers to “Shop This Way,” or “Do Not Shop This Way,” taking a page from some grocery stores including Kroger, Stop & Shop and Morton Williams that have implemented similar policies this month.
Walmart had been testing the one-way aisles in some of its stores in recent weeks, but on Thursday said all of its stores would sport the new decals nationwide.
Many customers thanked Walmart for the new policy on social media.
“Thank you. I’ve been avoiding shopping because it’s hard to keep safe. I’m high risk. Everyone may not appreciate it but I do,” shopper Denise Pinkston wrote on Walmart’s Facebook page.
“I have found that it increases shopping time, causes congestion in areas of high interest, and forces people close together in groups as some of us want to pass or move around slower people and get blocked,” McGee wrote. “I understand the idea behind it, but I don’t think it works very well.
