WASHINGTON — President Trump announced a second coronavirus task force on Friday, calling it a bipartisan “council” of great doctors and business experts focused on reopening the flat-lining U.S. economy.

“I call it the “opening our country task force” or “opening our country council” so we don’t get it confused with Mike’s task force which has done so great,” he told reporters in the White House briefing room, referring to Vice President Mike Pence’s effort.

Reports emerged on Thursday of a second, smaller task force which would be focused on reopening the economy by the target date of April 30.

The president said the group would be more informal, communicating via teleconferences, and would include “names that you have a lot of respect for,” which will be announced Tuesday.

“We’re going to have the great business leaders, great doctors. We’re going to have a great group of people,” he said, adding he wanted to quickly reopen the country which has been battered by the COVID-19 outbreak.

“I want to get the country open as soon as possible. This country was meant to be open and vibrant and great, not where people are staying in,” he said.

Trump maintained he would let “facts” and the advice of health experts determine when to give businesses the green light to reopen.
