PETERSBURG, Fla. — Warnings were issued to both the Rays and Yankees in the bottom of the first inning on Sunday after Jordan Montgomery drilled Austin Meadows in the right shoulder with a 92-MPH sinker with two outs in the series finale at Tropicana Field.

It came a day after Justin Wilson hit Joey Wendle in the helmet with a fastball — and after several seasons of tensions between the two AL East rivals that escalated last Sept. 1, when Aroldis Chapman threw a 100 MPH fastball near the head of Mike Brosseau.

At the time, Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash criticized the Yankees’ actions.

“It’s poor judgment, poor coaching, poor teaching,” Cash said. “I have a whole damn stable of pitchers that throw 98 miles per hour. Period.”
