Garrett Nussmeier is one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2021 class with scholarship offers from elite programs coast to coast. He has agreed to give Sports Illustrated exclusive access into his world by chronicling everything from his experiences leading up to a college commitment as a high profile recruit to his home life and preparation for his senior season.

What’s up, guys?

It’s Garret Nussmeier here, thank y’all so much for reading into this. I’m super excited to start this blog.

I’m a quarterback in the class of 2021 out of Marcus High School in Dallas, Texas. I live in a little suburb outside of Dallas, Flower Mound, Texas. I play 6A football, which in my opinion is the top high school football in the country, being in the state of Texas.

I have 32 scholarship offers up to date and I’ve really enjoyed this recruiting process, living out a life long dream I’ve had since I was a little kid.

My father (Doug Nussmeier) is a football coach for the Dallas Cowboys (pictured below, left) and he’s been at many different high-profile places around the country. I’ve gotten to watch top quarterbacks like A.J. McCarron, Drew Stanton, Jake Locker. I’ve always looked up to them my entire life.

Being a coach’s kid I’ve moved nine times, including Canada. I’ve lived in many different states and cities of many different sizes. So adapting to life is something I’ve gotten used to.

It’s been a crazy last few weeks, especially with this (novel) coronavirus stuff. Having to adapt again, it’s something I’ve been used to my entire life.

Recruiting has gotten kind of crazy now. My phone is always buzzing. Typically I’ll FaceTime at least two coaches a day. I’ll stay in contact with a lot of coaches every day. It’s been a fun, interesting time.

This time is great to take a step back and go back to the way things used to be. To spend a lot of time with your family and understand what matters in life.

Speaking of the coronavirus, my original timeline ever since I started this recruiting deal has been to commit at Easter (April 12) around my entire family. The plan was to announce it a week later, on April 18, after I had finished my visits.

But because of the coronavirus I was only able to finish my visits to TCU, LSU and Baylor. I had planned on also visiting Texas, Texas A&M, Miami and Arizona State. Throughout the process, my plan was never to release a top group, it was just to commit when the time was right. This is out of respect for the schools I choose not to commit to.

So I’ve decided to keep that behind closed doors, with my family. I would definitely say it’s tightened down but the coaches know who I’ve been communicating the most with. But it’s between me, the coaches and my family out of respect for schools continuing to recruit me.

Outside of recruiting, this coronavirus thing has thrown everything off with school as well.

I’m not at my house in Flower Mound, we have a house in Orange Beach, Alabama. I’ve been here instead of back home.

My schedule for the day is I wake up around 9:00, get a lift in with my weight room setup in my garage. Get done about 10:30 to 11:00, and then hop on the school work and eat some lunch. Around 4:00 my dad gets off of work and we go out to the field. Of course we’re social distancing with everybody else but there’s a little rec field in Orange Beach, away from everybody. I go get my throwing in, come home and sometimes do some fishing and then I go to bed.

I think for me it’s been a huge advantage having my dad as a quarterbacks coach. Especially in times like this when I can go get in work in with the quarterbacks coach for the Dallas Cowboys, one of the most prestigious NFL programs. It’s been a huge advantage as far as me not taking any steps backwards in being developed with him.

I’ve been working with him my entire life, so it’s been great.

Alright y’all, appreciate y’all for tuning in! I’m excited to get to do this blog hopefully once a week so come back next week for some more.

Stay safe and wash your hands.

Twitter: @CALEBcsw

Instagram: @garrettnussmeier
