The Oscar-winning actor, 63, detailed their experiences with the novel virus and recalled Rita Wilson‘s more severe symptoms.

“Rita went through a tougher time than I did,” Hanks said in an interview with the National Defense Radio Show. “She had a much higher fever and she had some other symptoms. She lost her sense of taste and smell. She got absolutely no joy from food for a better part of three weeks.”

Hanks, meanwhile, suffered from “some body aches and was very fatigued” while remaining isolated in an air-pressurized hospital room in Australia, where he and 63-year-old Wilson remained for two weeks. They both took the hotly debated anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine to treat the virus, but that only led to severe nausea for Wilson.

“She was so nauseous she had to crawl on the floor from the bed to the facilities,” explained Hanks, “and it lasted a while.”

The “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” star had his own difficulties, recalling when he couldn’t even muster the energy to complete routine rounds of stretching and sit-ups on the floor of the hospital.

“I was wiped after 12 minutes. I laid down in my hospital bed and just slept,” said Hanks.

When a member of the medical staff came to check on Hanks, he recalled telling them of his struggles, only to receive the staggering diagnosis.

“I said, ‘I just had the weirdest thing. I just tried to do basic stretches and exercises on the floor and I couldn’t even get halfway through.’ And she looked at me through her glasses like she was talking to the dumbest human being. And she said, ‘You have COVID-19.’”

The couple, who were diagnosed in March, still doesn’t know how they contracted coronavirus while in Australia, where Hanks was filming Baz Luhrmann’s forthcoming Elvis Presley biopic.
