The Jacksonville Jaguars are planning on signing Tebow to a one-year deal, according to NFL Network, as he plans a comeback as a tight end. Though the ex-quarterback had brief stints with the Patriots and Eagles, Tebow hasn’t played in the NFL since 2012 with the Jets.

Tebow, 33, recently had a tryout with the Jaguars after reaching out to them regarding his interest in converting to tight end.

After NFL teams no longer showed interest in Tebow as a quarterback, he pursued a baseball career and played several minor league seasons in the Mets organization. He retired from baseball in February.

Tebow is reunited with Urban Meyer, his former Florida Gators coach, who is making his first foray into the NFL with the Jaguars.

Meyer recently told USA Today that the Jaguars would “look into” signing Tebow if they thought he could help them win games. They were “not there” last week, but appear to be now.

After winning a Heisman Trophy and two national championships at Florida, Tebow was selected in the first round (No. 25 overall) by the Broncos in the 2010 NFL Draft. His career peaked with a wild-card playoff win against the Steelers in January 2012.

The Broncos then signed Peyton Manning and traded Tebow to the Jets, with whom he attempted just eight passes while appearing in 12 games during the 2012 season.

There was belief when he came out of college that Tebow’s best chance at a long NFL career would come at a different offensive skill position, but Tebow was determined to play quarterback. With his athletic prime dwindling, Tebow apparently is now open to putting the pads on again anyway he can.

It may end up with him not making the Jaguars’ roster. But Tebow is at least getting an opportunity to rewrite his NFL legacy.
