With the launches for Sony’s new PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and S timed for November, it was inevitable that video games would become the hottest items to score during Black Friday 2020. Even the Nintendo Switch reached new heights in popularity (and sales records) this year due to increased demand for indoor entertainment; it’s more sought-after now, three years after its release in 2017.

Alongside unprecedented popularity comes unprecedented demand, and the PS5 and the Xbox Series X and S have been nearly impossible to come by, selling out mere seconds after every restock. The Nintendo Switch has seen more inventory (although still back-ordered most of the time) and the Switch Lite is miraculously available on Amazon and Best Buy. Nintendo even released a special Black Friday bundle with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and a three-month membership to Nintendo Online, which was available for $299 at retailers like Walmart.

Although inventory for gaming consoles at many stores has been spotty at best, those who are lucky enough to already own one can find massive discounts for best-selling games. Nintendo’s ultra-popular titles like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Pokemon: Let's Go, Pikachu!, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, and Luigi’s Mansion 3 are all on sale for as little as $15. Games from the Super Mario franchise are just $35 at Best Buy right now, with top-sellers like Mario Tennis Aces, and Yoshi's Crafted World included in the markdowns. 

As for Xbox and PlayStation, shoppers can grab the much delayed (but worth the wait) Marvel’s Avengers for the PlayStation for just $27 now. Newly released games like NBA 2K21 and Just Dance 2021 are on sale, too, with prices as little as $30 on Amazon. Cyberpunk 2077 for the PlayStation and Xbox is even $10 off (only weeks before its release), and Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla for the two competing systems is only $49 as well.
