Happy 94th birthday, Queen Elizabeth!

The Queen participated in a public event for the first time since the coronavirus lockdown to celebrate her birthday.

On Saturday, the head of the royal family partook in a socially-distanced, slimmed-down version of the Trooping of the Colour ceremony at Windsor Castle to mark her special day, which passed on April 21.

Normally, the Trooping of the Colour includes a military parade, and then a gathering of the Windsor family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to view a flypast, according to People. Instead, a reduced group of 20 members of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards performed military drills on the castle’s lawn. The soldiers stood six feet apart, instead of their usual shoulder-to-shoulder formation. The Queen watched the ceremony from afar, without her family in tow.

The festivities were thrown together in just two weeks. This is the first time they took place outside of Buckingham Palace in Elizabeth’s 68-year-reign, reports The Telegraph.

Despite her solo status, the monarch was pleased with the honor. Photos show the longtime ruler smiling wide, while dressed in a blue coat and matching hat.
