Prince William has shared how having poor eyesight helped soothe his nerves when it comes to public speaking.

In an upcoming BBC documentary on men’s mental health and soccer, the 37-year-old royal was asked if he’s suffered from anxiety because of living in the public eye.

“Certain days, especially certain speeches as well, when I was growing up, you definitely get a bit of anxiety about it like, ‘Oh, this has to go right, there’s a lot of people watching,’” he remembered.

”Weirdly the sort of thing that helped me which I didn’t actually realize at the time was — I now wear contact lenses — my eyesight started to sort of tail off a little bit when I got older and I didn’t used to wear contacts when I was working,” he explained.

“So actually when I gave speeches, I couldn’t see anyone’s face and it helped because it’s just a blur of faces.”

William explained that he now realizes how it helped because, “you don’t feel the whole weight of the room is watching you.”

The Duke of Cambridge was followed by a documentary crew as he travelled around Britain promoting his Heads Up initiative, which seeks to encourage men to be open about their mental health.

The documentary entitled “Football, Prince William and Our Mental Health,” will air Thursday in the UK.
