The New England Patriots figure to select a quarterback at some point in the upcoming NFL Draft, and they aren’t just talking to big-school prospects as they move on at that position following Tom Brady’s free-agent departure.

The Pats have been in contact with Florida International signal caller James Morgan, recently conducting a videoconference meeting with him, according to ESPN.

Morgan played two seasons at Bowling Green and two for head coach Butch Davis at FIU, including an upset win over the Miami Hurricanes in November. The 23-year-old Green Bay native impressed scouts with a strong performance at the 2019 East-West Shrine Game in January.

The Pats presently have 2019 fourth-round pick Jarrett Stidham and journeyman Brian Hoyer at quarterback after Brady inked a two-year deal worth $50 million guaranteed last month with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Third-stringer Cody Kessler also was released by the Pats on Wednesday, creating a spot to add another quarterback via the draft, a trade or in free agency.

ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay doesn’t list Morgan among his top 10 draft prospects at the position, but the Pats went with small-school QB prospect Jimmy Garoppolo (Eastern Illinois) in the second round in 2014. They presently control the 23rd overall pick in the first round.
