The reporter said the air conditioning was turned off to save fuel, but was then turned back on after “people started sobbing and having panic attacks.”

She added that no one was permitted to leave the aircraft.

According to Andrew Trull, a spokesman for American Airlines, the flight was delayed due to a mechanical problem as well as nearby lightning.

If the airplane departed the gate, a snack would have been delivered "after a period of time," according to Trull, who did not elaborate.

According to the day's weather reports, North Carolina had rain and thunderstorms. According to the airline, the flight eventually departed at 7:03 p.m.
