Due to issues with the fuel tank, the flight to JFK, which was scheduled to depart at 1:07 p.m., ended up being delayed on the runway. As a result of the passengers' suffering, some began "sobbing," while others experienced "panic attacks," according to the Charlotte Observer.

Genna Contino, a reporter for the local paper, wrote, "Just sat on a plane with restricted AC for three hours while they were replacing the fuel tank, turns out they can't fix it and so we're moving planes I——-."

At 4:30 p.m., the passengers finally boarded a second aircraft after waiting for an additional three hours in the sweltering heat.

Contino wrote, "Entering hour six of sitting on a plane with no AC, no food, no drink service." "Someone is having a mental breakdown on the flight,"

The reporter said the air conditioning was turned off to save fuel, but was then turned back on after “people started sobbing and having panic attacks.”

She added that no one was permitted to leave the aircraft.

According to Andrew Trull, a spokesman for American Airlines, the flight was delayed due to a mechanical problem as well as nearby lightning.

“During that time the jet bridge remained attached and the forward boarding door remained open,” he said. “We know it can be frustrating when travel doesn’t go as planned, and apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.”

If the airplane departed the gate, a snack would have been delivered "after a period of time," according to Trull, who did not elaborate.

According to the day's weather reports, North Carolina had rain and thunderstorms. According to the airline, the flight eventually departed at 7:03 p.m.

The terrifying wait occurs during a summer jam-packed with terrifying aircraft tales, as millions of travelers have experienced cancellations and delays.
