Musician Casey Spooner has been documenting his stay at the recently reopened hotel on social media. “There’s no kitchen; there’s no room service,” Spooner said in an Instagram chat with artist TM Davy. “There’s a skeleton staff. There’s no cushions. It’s a very interesting combo of, like, luxury and economy.”

Spooner admits, “I actually prefer [it]. Usually, it’s so douchey. So many a –holes just trying to get attention, trying to get a job, trying to make it in Hollywood. It’s all the glamour and none of the bulls–t.”

A source familiar with the hotel, which let go of 242 employees in March without insurance or severance, says axed staffers have now received sums from a relief fund set up by owner André Balazs called the Chateau Family Fund. We are told that money was doled out based on seniority, which will also determine rehiring, alongside “need based on guest volume.”

Regulars including Sam Rockwell, Patricia Clarkson, Griffin Dunne and Ryan Murphy have chipped in. Online sales from the hotel gift shop are also helping the cause.
