Players will receive $50 million in exchange for the expanded playoff format. There’s a possibility there will be straight seeding in the first round rather than teams picking their opponents, according to Sherman. The first round is also expected to be a best-of-three series.

The inventory of postseason games goes from a maximum of 43 games with 10 teams to 65 games with 16 teams.

Opening Day is scheduled for Thursday night with the Yankees set to face the Nationals and the Giants taking on the Dodgers.
