ATLANTA — The Mets’ desperate search for outfield reinforcements led to a trade Tuesday for a familiar veteran name.

Cameron Maybin was acquired in a deal with the Cubs for cash considerations and assigned to Triple-A Syracuse. The 34-year-old Maybin had appeared in 10 games for the Cubs’ Triple-A team in Iowa, where he was slashing .103/.186/.205 in 10 games.

The move occurred on a day the Mets placed Kevin Pillar on the injured list with a broken nose after he was hit in the face by a pitch the previous night. Michael Conforto, Brandon Nimmo and Albert Almora Jr., are the other Mets outfielders on the IL.

The Mets’ patchwork outfield on Tuesday included Johneshwy Fargas and Khalil Lee, both of whom arrived from Syracuse a day earlier. Wilfredo Tovar, an infielder, was selected from Syracuse to take Pillar’s roster spot, but it’s expected Maybin will join the Mets in the coming days.

Jonathan Villar, who is playing third base in J.D. Davis’ absence, has outfield experience and can be used there in a pinch. The Mets used infielder Jake Hager to play right field on Sunday after Conforto departed with a strained right hamstring.

Pickings were slim for the Mets on the trade market unless they were prepared to part with a significant prospect. Maybin split last season between the Tigers and Cubs, posting a .694 OPS.

Nimmo, sidelined with a bruised left index finger, has been receiving treatment in Port St. Lucie, according to Rojas, and will join the club in Miami this weekend to continue his rehab, but there still isn’t a timetable on his possible activation.

Almora sustained a left shoulder contusion upon crashing into the center-field fence on the Mets’ last homestand. He has been progressing in recent days, according to Rojas, but there was no indication his return is close.
