The famed experimental artist — called a Satanist by conspiracy theorists — says that the thing she’s missing most during lockdown is a good giggle. “The one thing I miss … is humor,” she said in a Q&A for the Museum of Art & Photography in Bengaluru, India.

“It’s disappeared. Something to do with political correctness. Eighty percent of our work we could not do now. Work from the ’70s, the ’80s, the ’90s, because of this.”

She added, “During the Second World War, when everyone was thinking of disasters and tragedy, Matisse was painting only flowers. We need to be painting and we need beauty … We’re living in a time of death. But such an important time. We have to confront fears of the unknown. A time of mental and physical transformation. Embrace this!”
