Kyle Martino details exactly what went wrong in his marriage to Susan Sarandon’s daughter Eva Amurri, admitting that they tried to make it work, but ultimately “sucked at being married.”

In a new interview, the 39-year-old former soccer player said he met Amurri, 35, soon after a career-ending injury.

“I didn’t realize it then, but realize it now,” Martino said during an interview with “The Cooligans” on Fubo Sports Network this week, “I was going through serious depression and had been during most of my career and didn’t really know how to deal with it.”

He said that Amurri was there to “save his life,” adding that Sarandon and her longtime partner Tim Robbins were separating around the time they met as well and they “took turns saving each other.”

The couple, who wed in 2011, share three children together: Marlowe, 5, Major, 3, and newborn Mateo. They announced they were splitting up in November 2019, just two months after they announced they were expecting their third child. Amurri and Martino finalized their divorce in February, about a month before Mateo’s birth.

“The last three or four years we really sucked at being married,” Martino admitted. “We were trying really hard to make it work. Anyone who says, ‘Man this marriage thing is a knack, like this is great,’ is getting divorced soon.”

He also explained that being in the public eye made things harder because people were very judgmental. They “couldn’t imagine that we would make this decision from a place of love for each other, as a positive transition for our kids,” he continued.

“We love each other, we just suck at being married, and we shouldn’t be married,” he reiterated, adding that the couple are in a great place now. “We will be in each other’s lives forever as co-parents and have the best relationship we’ve had in a long time now because we didn’t tether success to making what we knew didn’t work for us.”
