On Sunday, the “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star, 39, announced Skims’ upcoming line of maternity shapewear, promising “the best in comfort and support for your changing body during and after pregnancy.”

Fans immediately questioned whether Kardashian should promote compression shorts and smoothing materials for pregnant bodies.

“What’s the point of even being pregnant if you have to hide the journey of your bump/ everything that comes with being pregnant?,” one person commented. “When I’m pregnant that will be my one chance to enjoy being fat… don’t see the point in this while I’m creating a miracle inside of me,” another said.

Kim responded directly to the critics on her Instagram Story. “To anyone who has an issue with maternity solutionwear, and if you haven’t been pregnant before you may not know the struggle of what it’s like carrying all of this weight the way I did along with millions of strong women,” she wrote.

“SKIMS maternity line is not to slim but to support. The belly part doesn’t slim your belly, it’s actually sheer and a thinner layered material compared to the rest of the garment. It provides support to help with the uncomfortable weight being carried in your stomach which affects your lower back — and the compression on the leggings helps with pain relief caused by swelling.”

She went on to explain that the materials can lend comfort and support after giving birth, especially for those recovering from a Cesarean section, adding that “tens of thousands” of pregnant women requested it and that maternity shapewear “was something I personally needed when I was pregnant myself.”

Jameela Jamil — who has actively spoken out against the Kardashian family for promoting detox teas, Photoshopping photos and more — also chimed in.

“It would be so cool if pregnant people could just be allowed to be pregnant and get bigger and not be self conscious, and enjoy the miracle taking place inside their body and not have to worry about feeling embarrassed/shamed that their body is changing for an amazing reason,” she tweeted.

Kardashian family friend Chrissy Teigen, who is currently pregnant with her third child, added her perspective in an Instagram Story while sporting the new maternity shorts and bra from Kim’s forthcoming line.

“We’re not trying to do anything to trick you. We’re pregnant. We would just like to feel good about ourselves in a time where mentally it can be challenging,” Teigen said, in part. “We’re not idiots, we don’t think that we’re giving you some magical hot body. It is not at all about making pregnant women feel like our bodies aren’t beautiful and miracles and beautiful and blah blah blah … we know all that’s true. We’re very happy to be pregnant.”
