Feeling stir-crazy while staying home during the coronavirus outbreak? Put the scissors down, says Kelly Ripa.

On Tuesday’s at-home episode of “Live With Kelly and Ryan,” the 49-year-old star strongly advised against DIY haircuts. “People are cutting their own bangs … they’re calling it a pandemic trend,” Ripa said.

“I’m not sure if I like the phrase pandemic trend, but they’re saying since [coronavirus] has taken hold of us, they’re cutting their hair out of boredom. People don’t cut their hair out of boredom, they cut their hair because they’re drunk and they think they know how to cut hair.”

As it turns out, the talk show host has firsthand experience with this particular mistake.

Kelly Ripa at the 1999 Daytime EmmysRon Galella Collection via Getty

“I know from where I speak,” Ripa admitted. “I cut my bangs before the Daytime Emmys about 22 years ago and I’ve never gotten over it. People just tend to be on their ‘I cut my bangs’ glass of wine. They think, ‘You know what, I’ve always wanted bangs and now I’m going to do it.’”

Ripa did indeed sport side-swept fringe at the 1999 Daytime Emmys, but she also took blunt-cut bangs for a spin several years later, even explaining her decision on an April 2003 episode of “Live With Regis and Kelly.”

“I cut bangs,” she told her co-host at the time. “Because I’ve realized the key to me looking younger is if everyone sees less of my face.”

It seems Ripa’s changed her tune in the years since; she’s even taking a break from covering her gray hair while staying home and social distancing, launching a “root watch” on her Instagram earlier this week.
