“I saw last week that your mom passed away, and I just wanted to express my condolences,” Abdul-Jabbar begins in the video message Griffin posted to Instagram Friday with the caption “this is what true friendship looks like.”

“It’s very tough to deal with that and not be able to be close to the people that you want to be close to at these tough times,” he continued.

Griffin’s mother died March 18 at the age of 99. “I am gutted,” Griffin wrote on Instagram at the time. “She was my best friend.” In January 2019, Griffin had acknowledged on social media that her mother had “rapidly fallen into the throes of dementia,” which was “devastating” to watch.

Abdul-Jabbar closes by offering his condolences again, as well as “a virtual hug, I guess.” He closes with the message with “Be well.”

“People wouldn’t think that I’m friends with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar,” Griffin acknowledged in her 2016 book,“Kathy Griffin’s Celebrity Run-Ins: My A-Z Index,” explaining that she simply sought him out to gain his friendship.

“I don’t know a lot about sports, but I really admire greatness…I’m so loud and obnoxious, but surprisingly I’m very intrigued by introverts — and Kareem is extremely introverted,” she explained.

Griffin even wrote a joke for Abdul-Jabbar to deliver next to Hillary Clinton at the 2016 Democratic National Convention: “Hi I’m Michael Jordan…I said that because I know Donald Trump couldn’t tell the difference.”
