Offense

The Jets new-look offense looked an awful lot like their old-look offense. Adam Gase’s unit had six three-and-outs, including their first three drives. They managed just 254 total yards and only 53 plays. QB Sam Darnold (15 of 35, 215 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 75.3 rating) looked terrible. His decision-making was poor and so were his passes. The running game averaged 3.5 yards per carry. WR Jamison Crowder (7 catches, 115 yards, 1 TD) was the only bright spot.

Defense

Gregg Williams’ unit was sliced and diced by Bills QB Josh Allen (33-for-46, 312 yards, 2 TDs, 104.6 rating, 14 rushes, 57 yards, 1 TD) early in the game. The D settled down, but it was too late. The Bills put up 404 yards and the Jets could not get them off the field (7-for-14 on third down). Safety Marcus Maye had a huge game (10 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 QB hits, 2 TFLs, 2 passes defensed, one forced fumble) in his first game without Jamal Adams next to him. There were not many other strong performances.

Special teams

The coverage units had a tough time with Bills returner Andre Roberts (5 punt returns, 69 yards, 1 kick return, 31 yards). Rookie Ashtyn Davis needs to be more under control on kicks. Kicker Sam Ficken made his only field-goal attempt of the day under windy conditions. Rookie P Braden Mann boomed a 58-yard punt and averaged 46.3 yards on six punts.

Coaching

The Jets did not look ready to play. It was across the board. The offense and the defense looked terrible. Gase’s main charge this year is to get Darnold playing well. That did not happen on Sunday. Williams’ defense could not contain Allen early. The coaching staff has a lot of things to fix.
