Garnier told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he never meant to make a threat. He pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor to avoid spending many more months in jail.

"I sounded like The Joker," Garnier said in a phone interview on Saturday. "I played the part. Everyone knew it was a joke and that I didn't mean to follow through on my threat."

Garnier told the Post-Dispatch that he spent more than 20 years in federal and state prison for stealing from a credit union and committing other crimes in the 1980s to pay for his crack habit. He said that he is now clean and that he wants to use his fame to bring attention to the opioid crisis.

He said he had another hard lesson to learn.

He told her, "Think before you act." "What you do has consequences. People took it seriously, no matter how silly or funny I thought it was."
