Maybe Brodie Van Wagenen knew what he was doing all along.

Jarred Kelenic, the much-ballyhooed prospect the former Mets general manager traded in the deal that brought Edwin Diaz and Robinson Cano to the Mets, has been sent down to Triple A after struggling immensely in the majors.

The 21-year-old outfielder was slashing .096/.185/.193 with a .378 OPS and in the midst of an 0-for-39 stretch that is the longest hitless streak of any player this season.

There was ample hype for the top prospect upon his call-up, especially when he went deep and had three hits in his second game. But his performance cratered after that, and now the former Mets first-round pick is back in the minor leagues.

Diaz, meanwhile, has bounced back after a shaky first season in Queens, pitching to a 3.09 ERA this year with 10 saves in 11 opportunities for the first-place Mets. The same cannot be said for Cano, who was suspended for the season by Major League Baseball after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs for the second time. The other prospect the Mets gave up in the deal, right-hander Justin Dunn, was pitching well before recently going on the IL. The Long Island native is 1-2 with a 3.18 ERA in nine starts.
