It was only a matter of time before Jamal Adams entered the war of words between the Jets and Seahawks.

Two days after Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams said Adams might get “bored” with Seattle’s vanilla defense, prompting a snarky response from Seahawks head coach Pete Caroll, Adams wrote Saturday on Twitter, “Gregg just misses me @PeteCarroll it’s ok… lol.”

Adams never has been afraid to fan the flames, particularly when it comes to his old team. The All-Pro safety was traded to Seattle last month after he voiced his complaints about not receiving a contract extension from the Jets, despite his rights being under control through 2021 at a team-friendly $9.86 million. (Adams and the Seahawks have agreed to wait until 2021 to discuss a new contract.)

When publicly responding to the blockbuster trade for the first time this week, Williams told reporters, “Jamal may get bored there because they don’t use their safety-type things with all the complexities … maybe not showing what they’re doing as much as we do,” in reference to Seattle’s Cover-3 scheme — which, though basic compared to other defenses, has been among the most dominant defenses in the league for several years.

Jamal Adams; Gregg WilliamsAP, Bill Kostroun

Williams, who guided the Jets to the second-best rushing defense last season, also noted that “maybe [Adam’s] most productive year here [was] because of how we highlighted the skill set he has.”

The comments drew a retort from Carroll, who said, “We don’t make as many mistakes as [Williams] does,” adding sarcastically, “Gosh, we’re so simple here and basic that we probably won’t get to any of that stuff. That might be a good idea. Thanks for bringing it up.”

Adams, 24, said he “cried tears of joy” after the Jets traded him for two first-round picks (in 2021 and 2022), a third-round pick in 2021 and safety Bradley McDougald, who is expected to replace Adams in the starting lineup.

“The plan is to retire here,” Adams said.

The Jets are scheduled to visit Seattle during Week 14.
