Lopez Obrador said, "We need to start a campaign to take down the Statue of Liberty, which the French gave to New York and which is no longer a symbol of freedom."

AMLO said at his news conference that he would talk about the issue with Vice President Joe Biden when they meet again soon.

"It's about being a good person," he said. "They will be stained if they don't do it."

The Mexican politician has been a strong supporter of Assange and his work through Wikileaks to make secret documents public. Lopez Obrador has said that Assange is "the best journalist of our time" and that his prosecution is "a shame for the whole world."
