The first baseman was absent from the starting lineup for the first time this season — manager Luis Rojas initially indicated Alonso was getting a night off to rest — because of soreness in his left wrist. Alonso was unavailable to pinch hit and will be reassessed on Friday.

Alonso previously had X-rays on the wrist (which were negative) after he got hit in the wrist two weeks ago in St. Louis.

Dominic Smith started at first base. He was 1-for-4 and scored a run in the Mets’ 5-4 loss.

Cameron Maybin was selected from Triple-A Syracuse and thrust into the starting lineup as the left fielder and No. 3 hitter a day after the Mets acquired him from the Cubs. He was 0-for-4. To create space on the 40-man roster, the Mets placed pitchers Sam McWilliams and Stephen Tarpley on the COVID-19 injury list at Syracuse. Players can be placed on the COVID IL without testing positive.

Yennsy Diaz was added to the taxi squad to give the Mets another potential reliever if needed on the road trip.
