After 20 years, you can’t end it by text message.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft told ESPN.com on Tuesday that Tom Brady came over on Monday night and the two decided that after six Super Bowls and two decades, the franchise and quarterback would go their separate ways.

“Tommy initiated contact (Monday) night & came over. We had a positive, respectful discussion,” Kraft said. “It’s not the way I want it to end, but I want him to do what is in his best personal interest. After 20 years with us, he has earned that right. I love him like a son.”

Kraft said shortly after the season that he wanted Brady to either return to New England or retire. Now, a third scenario — Brady playing for another franchise — seems destined to come true. The Buccaneers and Chargers are considered the favorites to sign Brady, though no decision is expected on Tuesday.

It’s unclear what exact role coach and GM Bill Belichick played in this decision. There were reports that Belichick was hesitant to pay Brady the $30 million that other franchises seem willing to do.
