Halima Aden is now a veteran Sports Illustrated Swimsuit star.

The model, 22, made history in 2019 as the first-ever person to wear a hijab and burkini in the pages of the magazine — and now she’s returned for the 2020 issue, posing in a slew of modest beach looks.

“SI Swim provides a safe and collaborative environment for the women to express themselves how they want to be, whether that’s through the images or how they break down the conception of what sexy is and looks like,” Aden told PopSugar about her experience with the shoot.

“You’re not just there to be a model, but you’re part of the scene, and what you say matters. At the end of the day, it’s your image, so the team does everything to make the girls feel confident enough to speak up.”

Aden, a Somali-American model and activist, was the first-ever woman to appear in the magazine wearing a burkini and hijab.Sports Illustrated

Aden also shouted out Valentina Sampaio, the magazine’s first-ever transgender model.

“That is a huge, huge deal and going to make so many people feel proud. We’re talking about representation, and the LGBTQ+ community is just another group of people that hasn’t felt represented,” she said.

Aden, a Somali-American activist and former nurse, was photographed by Kate Powers in the Dominic Republic wearing dozens of different suits, including a pink Tommy Hilfiger catsuit with a clear visor and camouflage-printed hijab, a two-piece suit by Myra Swim, a Nike burkini with matching hijab, a Fendi logo-printed poncho over a nude-colored Amazon Fashion burkini and more.

Also included in the same issue are 56-year-old model Kathy Jacobs and SI Swim veteran Samantha Hoopes — who modeled just four months after giving birth — as well as cover stars Jasmine Sanders, Olivia Culpo and Kate Bock.
