Following protests in the US after the police killing of unarmed black man George Floyd, the company has decided to remove the feature – claiming it had a “zero-tolerance policy for racism and hate speech”.

The feature was available for users who paid extra.

According to Pink News, many users experienced “no Blacks, no fats, no femmes” attitudes on the app.

GAGNews previously spoke to Grindr user Ashton who said he encountered a high level of racism from some of the app’s users.

During the ongoing protests in the US, the company had tweeted: “Demand Justice. #BlackLivesMatter.”

But a number of social media users responded with accusations of hypocrisy, driving the company to delete its original tweet.

In a new message, the company stated: “We will not be silent, and we will not be inactive.”

It added: “We will continue to fight racism on Grindr, both through dialogue with our community and a zero-tolerance policy for racism and hate speech on our platform.

“As part of this commitment, and based on your feedback, we have decided to remove thee ethnicity filter from our next release.”
