The league announced the postponement “due to continued follow-up testing and contact tracing involving members of the Nationals organization.” As of Thursday, three Nationals players had tested positive for the novel coronavirus, with a fourth “likely” positive, per Washington general manager Mike Rizzo.

“I shared our sympathies with the Nationals,” Mets manager Luis Rojas said. “It could happen to anybody.”

The games will be rescheduled for later in the season. The Mets return here twice more and the geographical proximity between the two clubs makes a one-off, on a common off day, viable as well.

The Mets plan to stay in Washington throughout the weekend and will work out at Nationals Park.

If the Mets’ season does start as scheduled on Monday, that would make Taijuan Walker the starter in the home opener on Apr. 8, according to Rojas.
