To celebrate his 30-year sobriety anniversary this week, the music icon posted a powerful message alongside photos of a cake in the shape of the number 30 and the cards and gifts he received to mark the occasion.

“I’m truly a blessed man. If I hadn’t finally taken the big step of asking for help 30 years ago, I’d be dead,” the 73-year-old wrote on Instagram. “Thank-you from the bottom of my heart to all the people who have inspired and supported me along the way.”

He called his “sobriety birthday” the “most magical day,” saying he received “So many lovely cards, flowers and chips from my sons, [husband] David [Furnish], friends in the Program, staff at the office and in our homes.”

The singer has been open about his addiction and process of recovery. In an interview last year with NBC’s Harry Smith following the release of his autobiography titled “Me,” John said that said that his “biggest regret is taking drugs,” in relation to his cocaine addiction. His downward spiral was also captured in the 2019 biopic “Rocketman.”

John’s famous pals from David Beckham to Bernie Taupin took to the comments section to congratulate the star for reaching the sobriety milestone. Furnish praised his husband as “my hero.”
