During an interview Wednesday, he said it was “not surprising” members of the D.C. National Guard tested positive for coronavirus after helping contain recent demonstrations.

Dr. Fauci went on to stress it’s still important to socially distance while the U.S. reopens and noted that avoiding congregating in large numbers is a vital way to limit the virus’ spread. He also said repercussions from protests will likely be far-reaching since many people who participated traveled from out of town.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if that members of the congregation who were there demonstrating could also be infected,” he stated. “Many of them would then go back to where they were because not everyone was demonstrating in the city where they live, they’ve come from the outside.”

The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases went on to advise Americans to continue wearing masks, wash their hands and practice social distancing as much as possible.
