DJ David Guetta is being dragged on social media for a tone-deaf tribute to George Floyd that included a remixed speech by Martin Luther King Jr.

Guetta, 52, was hosting a livestreamed fund-raising event on a New York City rooftop for coronavirus relief efforts on Saturday when he played the tune.

“The world is going through difficult times and America, too, actually,” Guetta said during the performance. “Last night, I knew we were going to do this and I made a special record… in honor of George Floyd. I really hope we can see more unity and more peace when already things are so difficult.”

The “Titanium” DJ gave a “shout out to [Floyd’s] family” before debuting his electro-activist jam, which sampled King’s seminal “I Have a Dream” speech.

Despite having spent apparently all night putting the track together, Guetta’s effort fell flat.

“Yes David Guetta,” wrote Irish journalist Áine McMahon on Twitter. “I’m sure that’s exactly what George Floyd would have wanted… an EDM banger sampling Martin Luther King.” She included the emoji with raised eyebrow.

“There’ve been a lot of crimes committed against my ppl this weekend, but David Guetta putting a drop behind MLK’s ‘I have a dream’ speech is up there,” tweeted Rolling Stone writer Charles Holmes.

“It’s lazy and easy to joke that something feels like it was scripted by Sacha Baron Cohen but also,” wrote Canadian journalist Sean Craig in reference to the jam.

Nevertheless, Guetta went on to raise £540,000 ($670,000) during the broadcast.
