Snoop Dogg Declares Death Row as NFT Record Label: 'I Want to Be the First Major in the Metaverse.'

Snoop Dogg surprised fans in a dedicated Clubhouse session yesterday, revealing intentions for Death Row Records to become the first NFT record company.

"Death Row will be an NFT label," Snoop remarked, as heard in the video above. "We shall be releasing artists via the metaverse." I want to be the first major [label] in the metaverse, just as we shattered the business by becoming the first independent [label] to be big."

The announcement comes only a week after Snoop teamed up with blockchain gaming business Gala Games to promote his new album B.O.D.R. (Bacc on Death Row), which was released on the blockchain as a stash box of NFTs in the Gala Music shop.

The Gala Music edition of the album, which costs $5,000, includes one of the album's 17 songs as an NFT, as well as three unique additional tracks.

"If there's one constant in the music business, it's that it's continuously changing," Snoop remarked in a news statement. "Blockchain technology has the potential to revolutionize everything again and tilt the scales in favor of artists and fans, and with this Gala Music contract, we'll be right at the head of the pack."

Last Monday, the Long Beach rapper bought the Death Row Records brand from MNRK Music Group, which purchased the company's rights from Hasbro in 2019 for $4 billion.

“I am thrilled and appreciative of the opportunity to acquire the iconic and culturally significant Death Row Records brand, which has immense untapped future value,” Snoop said in a statement. “It feels good to have ownership of the label I was part of at the beginning of my career and as one of the founding members.”
